• these are largely kept apart within academia, but they're all relevant to understanding real world argumentation and persuasion

• the rhetorical tradition, for example, places more emphasis on the role of the audience, and the response of the audience, in determining what counts as a "good argument" in a particular context

• important role for psychology in understanding what makes arguments persuasive or not
